Well they can milk the class and culture divide for east Bristol but they won't be able to do that so easily in the south as the same street closures happen there. Indigenous Bristolians versus the Clifton offshoot of higher earners isn't quite so dramatic. Let's hope they see the bigger agenda by the time the it kicks off there.

Let's see! And I didn't refer to it in this piece, though I have done elsewhere, but although claims of racism and classism are being encouraged in East Bristol, in fact what is really happening is that people are coming together against the council. It's why I think people have to be very careful that they don't then fall into playing along with the council's surreptitious encouragement of words like 'racism'. Focus on the unity rather than victimhood.

Yes, easy for non-locals to think that way when reading about the events from other sources.

Looking at those zones or whatever they call them I’d be very concerned. Some are much smaller in terms of number of streets than others, now maybe there are tower blocks in those streets but if there is not I don’t think those parks are going to remain green areas for long. If my suspicion is correct the long term aim is to build on parts of them, no doubt calling it “Affordable housing”

There are indeed many tower blocks for social housing in Barton Hill, including the famous Barton House that was evacuated in 2023 on safety grounds and to which the residents were eventually returned with nothing having been done to address the concerns... I'm not even sure they are bothering calling new housing 'affordable' anymore - it's all just called 'student accommodation'.

And it's really important to point out those parks, because the idea that a few 'pocket parks' (ugly planters and benches which the council doesn't even bother to look after) are a contribution to wellbeing and having more greenery is laughable, when you already have such big parks as East Bristol does. If they are built on, as you suggest, then I really do wonder how there can be anyone left who could claim with a straight face that these schemes are in any of the current residents' best interests.

I wish I could say I'm shocked but very little does shock me now.

We know what the answer will be : "It's for your own good and that of the planet, Helen".

Never mind the mental health issues that are caused.

Helen's avatar

Yep. As we know from recent years, mental health goes out the window when TPTB kid everyone that all that matters for health is, depending on the moment, avoiding pathogens, not breathing polluted air, reducing the risk of getting hit by a car to zero, etc.

More proof at even the local level government is pointless.

I'd be interested to hear you expand upon this comment, if you have time?

Indeed.

For some reason Substack says I'm is blocking myself from liking your comment, which is confusing!
